$1.5B Atlanta Children’s Hospital Preparing for Big Move

The official start date is September 29 of 2024. Once that day arrives, ambulances will ferry 340 patients to the new Arthur Blank Hospital. Once that’s done the Children’s Egleston hospital, where the patients are currently under care, will close down. Besides the patients, the staff has to move over 35,000 pieces of medical equipment. Children’s has already taken possession of some of the new facility’s floors and has begun moving in medical equipment.

The new $1.5 billion hospital building will have a total of 446 beds, 116 more than are currently available at Egleston. That 33% increase in capacity means more staff will be needed.

Children’s will hire about 1,000 new workers to meet the demand, and the new hospital is expected to employ around 4,500 total.

Each patient will have a private room with space for parents to spend the night. Each floor will have laundry facilities, a family lounge and a kitchenette so families away from home can wash their clothes and cook.
